Beirut - Notre Dame du Salut

Beirut - Notre Dame du Salut

On the ground floor is a Maronite church, the Notre Dame du Salut. By some accounts, this is the site where the civil war started. It was here that Palestinian gunmen with automatic weapons waited for the church service to finish and opened fire on the parishioners as they left, killing several. After that the Christians formed militias to patrol the streets in vigilante groups and started killing Palestinians.

Photo circa 2004.
